Title Fights Cram August MMA Agenda

No less than six MMA division titles are at stake in the month of August, and at least four of those promise pure, violent entertainment value.

Start with the UFC’s second Versus event from Colorad. Superstar in the making Jon Jones meets wily light heavyweight veteran Vladimir Matyushenko. Clearly, the smart money is on Jones, but a Matyushenko victory, though unlikely, is not out of the question.

UFC middleweight champ, Anderson Silva, looks to silence upstart veteran Chael Sonnen at UFC 117 in a title bout to put an end to the finest exchange of jawing between fighters in UFC history.

Following those tussles by a single day, Joseph Benavidez takes on newly-minted champ Dominick Cruz for the WEC Bantamweight belt in what is sure to be an entertaining – and free – scrap of monumental proportions.

You can give your wallet a rest when Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza takes on Tim Kennedy for the vacant Strikeforce Middleweight Championship Bout and Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante takes his shot against Muhammad “King Mo” Lawal for the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Championship at Strikeforce: Houston

Next up, a championship rematch featuring lightweight title holder Frankie Edgar and former champ BJ Penn at UFC 118 from Boston promises fireworks aplenty, and a match to fuel the fires of the boxer vs martial artist debate brings two of the most respected fighters in their respective disciplines toe-to-toe as James “Lights Out” Toney squares off with Randy “The Natural” Couture.
