Jon Fitch will have no problems recalling his clash with St-Pierre

“Right now I’m the world champion. I’m the target and everybody wants to take my place,” St-Pierre said. “It’s hard to become champion, but it’s even harder to stay the champion. I don’t only want to win, I want this win to be remembered forever.”

Jon Fitch will certainly recall his shot at St-Pierre’s title.

If the Vegas bookmakers are to be believed, Dan Hardy is heading down the same path Fitch walked before him.

St-Pierre enters the fight an 8-1 favorite.

  • A welterweight title bout and the rematch between Jon Fitch (21-3 MMA, 11-1 UFC) and Thiago Alves (16-6 MMA, 9-3 UFC) are the featured fights on the UFC 111 card for March 27.

UFC 111 takes place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, and Fitch vs. Alves is one of five fights slated to air on pay-per-view.

Fitch defeated Alves in 2006, and they were first slated to rematch back in December at UFC 107. Alves, though, was forced off the card with a knee injury.

Both Alves and Fitch have suffered previous losses to welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, and both came via lopsided unanimous decision. Fitch’s came in 2008 at UFC 87, and it snapped a 16-fight win streak which included eight straight wins in the UFC.

Since that defeat, Fitch has three straight unanimous decision wins against quality opponents; Akihiro Gono, Paulo Thiago and Mike Pierce.

Alves’ loss to St-Pierre was in July at UFC 100 and snapped a seven-fight winning run. All the Alves’ wins were in the UFC and his victims included Josh Koscheck, Matt Hughes, Karo Parisyan and Chris Lytle.
