Freddie Roach Knows the Standup Game and He Says Toney Is Nothing But An Example
There aren’t a lot of people in the fight game who know more about how a man should throw his hands than Freddie Roach, and Roach says Dana White found the perfect man to demonstrate the superiority of MMA fighters over boxers in former middleweight boxing champ James Toney.
“I think they’re using James as a way to say MMA fighters are better than boxers. If he fights a quality ground guy, once he goes to the ground he’s gonna get killed. But If a guy chooses to stand up with James, James is gonna destroy him. That’s why they call him ‘Lights Out.’ I really don’t think there’s one fighter in MMA that could stand with James.”
Roach says the UFC has no intention of using Toney for anything other than a shining example of the difference between boxing and mixed martial arts, and he may well be right.
He may, however, be overlooking the one thing in the fight game that everyone involved says is the Golden Rule.
A man who knows how to throw always has a Puncher’s Chance…
