Winner of Coenen vs Modafferi To Get Title Shot Against Santos
- Posted by Whitey Hudson on November 7th, 2009
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker now says the winner of the Saturday clash between Marloes Coenen and Roxanne Modafferi earns the winner a shot at the 145-pound title now held by Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos.
Modafferi and Coenen meet in as part of the preliminary card of Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers tonight on CBS to replay their May 2007 fight.
Modafferi garnered a split-decision win over Coenen in May in the final bout of a an eight-woman tournament.
Santos won the belt in August with an overwhelming first-round TKO victory over Gina Carano.
“It’s definitely a No. 1 contender’s fight,” Coker said. “Whoever wins this fight will fight Santos.”
Modafferi recently signed with Strikeforce and boasts a six-fight win streak. She’s fought once in the past 19 months.
Coenen’s latest action, a decision loss to Cindy Dandois in January, was the last action she’s seen after putting up eight wins in a nine-fight run since her loss to Modafferi.
