GFA 4 Report From David Snipes
GFA 4 Saturday August 15th, 2009 From the Alexandria Riverfront Center
The cage was set in the middle of the floor with several places to eat and quite a few T-Shirt vendors as well as the US ARMY table, witch has been present at every MMA show we have been to. Two main cameras, a roving camera and a camera crane should get some great views on the 6 large screens. They had a local band playing in the cage and the camera crew worked really well and cut in and out. Later during the fights they were pretty flawless in getting great angles- only once did they get stuck
in a bad position where we could not see what’s going on- but with 12 fights- only one minor flaw is a HUGE feather in the cap for the show.
First fight was not until 8, and unfortunately the crowd kind of started to turn on the band a bit waiting to start (by the way, stating it was “time to play us off” does not mean- “we have 3 more songs to go”)

(I’m sorry for any errors in the blocks, please let me know if I have any errors, the fight card was only on the screen for about 5 seconds- cards looked nice, but up WAY too short, another oddity is the ring announcer would say one height and weight- the card would show another frequently – of course 90% of the crowd don’t care if he’s 5′9 or 6′2, also they didn’t announce the records for most fighters, so I did the best I could via Google, and as always If you know better PLEASE let me know.)
Pre-fight they had interviews on the screen – Love that touch, but only for this fight and the fights at the end of the card.
Brooks states he’s going to take it too him and work his Ground and Pound
Shad states he works on his mental training and his prediction “Me Winning”
Brooks comes in with his head down with a shoots. Shad grabs his head and spins him around- hits with a flurry of crosses and a right cross catches the chin and DOWN goes Brooks! KO Shad celebrates his debut win with a POWERFUL knockout!

WINNER:
Shad Jenkins 0:12 R1 KO
Brooks is down for about 3 minutes but does leave the ring under his own power.

I’m putting all my money on Foster here – no way he losesthis fight.
Why? Take a look

The man has a SIX INCH REACH – Foster is going to KILL HIM
Chris comes out with a NICE straight jab- little bit of standup- then Foster shoots and pushes Oritz to the cage, he leaves his neck out and Oritz has a DEEP guillotine on him- Foster battles for a bit, trying to pull him to the ground- but Oritz arcs his back and puts all the pressure on the choke, Foster taps but the ref is out of position for a
few seconds before catching it and calling a stoppage!

Winner: Chris Oritz 1:41 Submission

| 5′7 175 | Ht / Wt | 6′2 170 |
| * | Record | Debut |
| Glenmore LA | From | Eunice LA |
| Riverside Combat | Gym/Team | Independent |
* I have found Rudy at both 1-2 and 2-1
We have our first ref mike!
“Lets get ready to knuckle up!”
It is announced that this is Rudy Rudisill’s final fight. Circle and a NICE right uppercut by Kyle stuns Rudy for second but the following flurry does little damage, scramble to the ground and as they rise Kyle hits an illegal knee, ref stops the action, giving Rudy time to recover- It is not shown if Kyle lost a point or not- I would think not, it was unintentional to hit him on the ground- solid knee however.
Restart both men are just throwing haymakers at each other- then Kyle dives for the takedown- pushed to the cage and some
decent G&P by Kyle, Rudy turtles and the ref calls a stoppage!

WINNER: Kyle Verk 1:51 R1 Ref Stoppage

| 1-2 | Record | Amateur Record 3-3 |
| Clint Alabama | From | Borrowsville OK |
| Team Spartan | Gym/Team | Team SFS |
Houston has the first entrance music that I know – “Living on the Edge.” I wonder if the band could have played some of these guys in- that might have been a nice touch.
Cody is the ONLY one to notice the camera and mug for it during the intros
Houston is standing a popping Cody- gets him three times pretty hard Cody shoots and has control from the side- back up and Cody misses a POWERFUL kick that you can hear from the 10th row! Cody is getting the worse of the standup and clinches to a takedown, Houston has some good upkicks as the round ends.
10-9 Cody

ROUND 2
Cody comes in with a flying knee AA style- Fedor/Houston stops that with a straight right. Cody with a takedown and they roll a bit Houston seems to be going for a North South choke but leaves his arm out and Cody snatches it and the Kamura finishes the fight! The Crowd loves them some Cody!

WINNER: Cody Cummings 2:33 Kamura (called a Hammerlock by
announcer)

| Matt Clayton | VS | John Hubley |
| 5′11 155 | Ht / Wt | 5′7 150 |
| Record | ||
| Stillwater OK | From | Barnalsville |
| Combat Cage Fighting | Gym/Team | Team SFS |
I don’t know who measured these guys but if there is only 4 inches between these two then Larry Allen is only 4 pounds from showing up to training camp at 300 pounds.
Circling to start- overhand right by Clayton stuns John, John clinches to save- Hubley looks a but tired but is able to get Clayton to the cage, Hubley bumrushes Clayton after a separation back to a clinch, eats a knee and they separate- Hubley starts throwing some leg kicks.

10-9 Clayton as he did more damage and that overhead right took a toll.
ROUND 2
No glove tap
Hubley starts off where the previous round left off and keeps with the leg kicks- Clayton is trying to tag him with rights but Hubley has some GREAT movement- does get tagged with a right that stuns him for a second but Clayton doesn’t follow up, so Hubley goes back to the leg kicks- Clayton is not using his reach and is not being aggressive, Hubley is scoring points, but he is not exactly doing massive damage to that leg, Clayton is not limping or anything, LOTS of circling however-
Hubley is staying out of the corners and Clayton is more worried about the shoot than the kicks. Clayton finally catches him and drops Hubley and gets some pounding in before the bell rings.

Hard to judge- Hubley did more damage but Clayton got 2 knockdowns
ROUND 3
Glove touch this time.
Hubley is working the leg kick a bit more – the UNLEASHES a flurry, but tries to put him down instead of taking what is given and Clayton clinches to save- and grabs a guillotine! down they go and Clayton looks GASSED they keep on the feet and neither really engaging and Clayton is WORN out!

Hubley 10-9 don’t think he did enough for a 10-8
The announcer asks the audience who won the fight, they are behind Hubley and 2 of the three judges agree!
WINNER: John Hubley by Majority Decision

| Rich McMurry | VS | Christian Sutton |
| 6′2 205 | Ht / Wt | 6′3 216 |
| 1-1 | Record | |
| Turkey Creek LA | From | Houston TX |
| Ringside MMA | Gym/Team | Team Hogar |
Push to the cage by Rich- GREAT overhand right coming out of the clinch by Rich, Sutton is trying to keep distance, he is keeping ALL his weight on his back foot. He is almost DARING Alan to shoot, Alan is not taking the bait and they are doing a LOT of rotating around the cage- Sutton is almost flat footed but is keeping distance.
Coin Flip round but I’ll go with Rich, only for movement and that overhand right

Sam is reading Christian the RIOT ACT, he looks upset about something.
ROUND 2
Clinch to the cage by Rich, switch and Sutton busts out the first foot stomps I have ever seen live. Those seem like they would hurt like a MOTHER if they catch right- and tick you off either way (Like Rampage and Forrest agreeing not to do them for their fight)
Nice overhand right by both men-plenty of flurries but I wonder if there is any damage being done. Rich did pull off some nice knees in a clinch but not more than 2 or 3 that landed solid.

Round ends 10-9 Rich, starting to see a bit of separation- Sutton is either not working the gameplan or its not working, he looks great in there but is simply not doing much damage, Rich is simply out pointing him.
Round 3
Punch counter-punch for a while. Christian stands with his hand extended for a good 20 seconds then swings a WILD haymaker! Misses and Rich lands the best punch of the fight and staggers him! The crowd is to its feet, but Sutton recovers quickly and we go back to the same routine until a clinch by rich an a takedown and Sutton might have done his best work working from the bottom- so he might have been looking for the ground game earlier. Too little too late.

WINNER: Rich McMurry 30-27 across the cards.

Good shoot by John Boy (gotta love the nickname) and Alan with a slam, John Boy is trying a submission from the bottom, Alan gets a nice side headlock and is getting TON of punches in. I have no idea how much damage its doing but its scoring points. John Boy is in no real damage it seems.

Round ends 10-9 Alan
ROUND 2

Alan shoots and John Boy grabs a guillotine – John jumps and wraps his legs around him- Alan falls under the weight and John Boy grabs and ankle and gets the stoppage!
WINNER: Jonathon Belton Submission 1:06 R2

| Undefeated Amateur | Record | Debut |
| Durin OK | From | Lafayette LA |
| Fight MOB | Gym/Team | SIFT |
Don’t look now, but I know BOTH of these theme songs- Kevin has Enter Sandman and Tyler has “In the Air Tonight” not the Phil Collins one- but some remake
LONG feeling out period, Kevin gets dumped and Tyler has good side control, but keeps moving for the guillotine instead of just punishing the ribs- back up and Tyler clinches him to the cage, then down they go, scramble and Tyler has a nice RNC going but Kevin is defending it well. Kevin turtles and escapes but Tyler does get in some
standing pound – hits he back of the head a few times but no real fouls, Kevin tries to spin and we end up Tyler swinging his arms sitting on his butt in a nice visual until the Round ends!

10-9 Tyler
ROUND 2
Starts off much faster than round 1 and Kevin is able to get him down, but not much damage done- as Tyler is getting up Kevin trips him then tries to charge him, but Tyler recovers his balance and we go to a standup after a little trading Tyler with a Judo Trip and falls into a GREAT looking full guard by Kevin- but Tyler pulls his arms out then walks through his guard to full mount and gets some G&P then swings into a SWANK armbar for the TAP!

WINNER:
Tyler Price 3:28 R2 Sub (armbar)

| 5′10 171 | Ht Wt | 5′10 170 |
| Record | ||
| From | Houston TX | |

Ryan pushes to the cage leaves his neck wide open for a Guillotine but Ryan picks him and SLAMS him down and gets into 3/4 guard and Ryan fires off rapid punches, Alex finally pushes him off, Superman punch by Ryan misses and he falls into full guard but does get off some great G&P they get to their feet as the round ends.
10-9 Ryan

Round 2
Alex pushes him into the cage, Ryan twists him down into a clinch, and this time Alex gets slammed down with a little bit more rotation on him rolling a bit but Ryan gets the mount and lands about 2 dozen punches and I’m a little surprised at the no-stoppage but Alex is showing a TON of heart he turtles but does a GREAT job of defending the RNC as the round ends.
10-9 Ryan easy- and I could argue a 10-8

Round 3
![]() |
Sam Hoger is out again with his fighter and is in a much better mood than he has been at some of these fights Letme say something real quick, I met Sam after the show and he was Personal note- Sam is HUGE up close. He’s listed at 6′3 205 on his bio, meaning he is an inch |
Again another clinch, Alex really needs to throw some kicks and get some distance and WHAM another slam by Hughes then he gets a SUPLEX and goes for a RNC- but Ryan may have gassed on that as there is not much action after that. Bit of an anti-climax to two great rounds but Alex was forced to wrestle and Ryan simply dominated. 10-9

WINNER: Ryan Josie Unanimous Decision

| Darren Armstrong | VS | Arteneus “Machine Gun” Young |
| 6′3 205 | Ht Wt | 6′2 200 |
| Record | 4-1 | |
| Durant OK | From | Houston TX |
| Fight MOB | Gym/Team | Team Hoger |
Darren comes out to Down with the Sickness and Arteneus counters with Momma said knock you out! WHY is that not used by 70% of every MMA fighter
out there?
Round 1
Judo trip and Darren lands on his HEAD! Darren gives up his back, turtles, starts to buck and slides out the backdoor in a nice move! Young trips and Darren pounces gets a TIGHT Guillotine and JUST as he locks his ankles the horn goes.10-9 Young- but he looks gassed.

ROUND
2
Clinch to the cage and some HIGH Knees by Darren, Young gets ROCKED by one knee and Darren muscles him over – Darren is in love with the RNC and is not doing much damage, giving Young time to recover. Young
defends it VERY well, and even pops a “inadvertent” headbutt as the round ends.
10-9 Darren

ROUND
3
We get a little bit of standup for the first time, Young shoots for another takedown and we have 5 VERY slow minutes fighting for position.

After the horn sounds, Young can barely stand- he is DONE, Hoger is having to hold him up for the fight announcement When asked who won, the crowd is VERY divided. but Darren pulls the split decision
WINNER: Darren Armstrong Split Decision
NOTE: Post fight it was announced that Young had a 103 temp that week, his team is trying to get him out of the cage but he gets a round of applause from everyone, I can’t question his heart- but he just went 15 minutes on the ground and cannot move, let alone walk under his own power- I’d like to see him at 100%, but I wonder if Darren would.

| Robert Agee | VS | Adrian “The Drill” Miles |
| 6′3 170 | Ht Wt | 5′11 171 |
| Debut | Record | |
| Alexandria LA | From | Birmingham AL |
| Ringside Combat | Gym/Team | Spartan Fitness |
Robert comes out to Nightmare on Elm Street- interesting, but the intro is WAY too long- he was almost in the cage before we knew what it was! The Steps and knocking was at least 3 minutes before we knew. Interesting though- you could almost hear the crowd go- “oh, that’s what that is” when it started the music.
Adrian with a shot, Agee keeps looking for that Guillotine, nothing real dangerous- scramble to the feet and back down we go after a clinch, rinse and repeat- on the 4th time they get to their feet, Miles does not backup fast enough and Agee just unloads a flurry- getting at least 2 good shots in before the rest gets blocked by Miles, might have done some damage there, Miles with a shot and takedown as the round ends.

10-9 Miles, I value takedowns more than a flurry.
ROUND 2
![]() |
Agee with a clinch to the cage, switch by Miles and he slings him to the ground- not much damage being done, they are working enough to avoid a standup, but not doing any damage, slow scramble to the feet- Shoot by Miles and Agee grabs the 184th guillotine attempt of the night. This has been a night for the guillotine. Horn sounds and the crowd is getting restless, we have been going over 3 hours by now. 10-9 Miles |
ROUND 3
| Agee comes out with a little fire, he shoots and takes down Miles, but is unable to do much, Agee with another takedown but Miles is just too strong to be held down! Agee shoots and drags him down again! Agee with MULTIPLE takedowns in this round but does almost NO damage. The Crowd is starting to hate on this fight- its almost like watching early Rashad, I don’t mean that in a bad way- neither fighter is taking risks, but neither are they doing much damage. Agee takes the round (10-9) however but this fight took forever. |
![]() |
Crowd is cheering the local fighter, but he loses the split decision and MASSIVE boos from the crowd- under the Pride system, Agee would have won this one easy, but Miles took 2 close rounds and under the 10-9 must, that will do it for you.
WINNER Adrian Miles: Split Decision

| 6′ 185 | Ht Wt | 5′11 185 |
| Record | 9-1 | |
| Chico California | From | Center TX |
| Stand Alone MMA | Gym/Team | Team DoggPound |
Hey Announcer, Buffer will sue you if you take his lines there. Both fighters look ready- and the LONG layoff until this fight starts doesn’t seem to have affected them- they are both looking ready to go- Tony can barely stand still just bouncing back and forth. Bell is more relaxed. Bell rings and off we go- clinch by Tony- forces him to the cage and Bell with a swing that connects- Tony with a combo and Bell is back to the cage, Bell with a NICE right and Tony answers back with a cross that looks
like it caught Bell for a second- Tony chases him across the cage and hits a flurry- then a MASSIVE headkick (pic2) and Tony is DOWN! Bell jumps and gets maybe 1 shot in but the ref dives and stops the fight, looks like an early stoppage and the crowd is NOT happy, Tony is up and he is PISSED he gets in the refs face- looks to even jump at the ref but his corner comes in and push him back and Tony is out of the ring and heading to the back! Bell is the only man to jump on the side of the cage.

WINNER: Chris Bell 2:01 KO
Looking at the replay- Tony is out- his head is snapped back and he is limp, as quick as he recovers he has a case to argue- but these refs have done an EXCELLENT job all night and he was right on top of the action. I’ll say it was the right call, but Tony can make a case- problem is, Chris has a good pounce and he was right on him as he was falling.
All in all it was an EXCELLENT SHOW
