St. Pierre vs. Silva A Possibility? The Fight Everyone Wants to See

An Anderson Silva vs. Georges St. Pierre Matchup Would Be Epic Stuff

BJ Penn issued a challenge to Georges St. Pierre after his win over Jon Fitch at UFC 87, and most of the MMA world said, ‘Hell Yes’.

On the other hand, lots of us wanted to see a St. Pierre vs. Anderson Silva match – and it just never happened.

Penn is a talented mixed martial artist, but one look at him tells you he isn’t as physically gifted as St. Pierre.  St. Pierre bullied Penn around the Octagon at UFC 94 to take an easy win, and in a large part that was due to the Canadian’s physical edge. The infamy of the “Greasegate” situation – Penn’s claim that St. Pierre used an all-over coat of Vaseline to prevent Penn from utilizing his grip and jiu-jitsu game – was probably more hype than reality. Penn may have had a legitimate beef, but a rematch will have to wait for the result of the Penn vs. Florian bout.

The welterweight division looks thin and populated with precious few legitimate challengers for St. Pierre behind Thiago Alves, there’s never been a better time than after UFC 100 and UFC 101 to put together a St. Pierre vs. Silva tussle. That assumes, of course, that St. Pierre and Silva defeat Alves and Forrest Griffin. Dana White says he’d like to see a champion fighter “clean out” his division before moving on to another weight class.

Silva has already taken care of everyone but Demian Maia.

Should Maia defeat Nate Marquardt at UFC 102, he would clearly deserve a title shot. If Marquardt wins, his shot at the title should be a little further down the road. A Silva title defense against either fighter would be interesting, there’s no way in hell it would generate the kind of frenzy that would attend a fight with St. Pierre.
