NYC Meet and Greet With Carano and Santos

Mixed martial arts’ female superstar Gina “Conviction” Carano (7-0) and her number one rival, Brazilian powerhouse Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (7-1), will be on hand in New York City for a press conference and public meet and greet at Madison Square Garden’s WaMu Theater on Tuesday, July 14. The fighters will answer questions about their Strikeforce World Championship matchup.

The press conference begins at 2:30 PM. Both fighters will sign autographs after the event.

The bout at  the HP Pavilion on Saturday, August 15, in San Jose, California,  marks the first time a women’s fight will take main event status at a major promotion. The  women face off for the first-ever Strikeforce 145-pound Female Championship. The fight is set for five, five-minute rounds, also a first for female fighters in a major MMA promotion.

The 27-year-old Carano has soared to superstardom over the last two years while dominating opponents live on CBS and SHOWTIME. Her unique combination of stunning looks and athleticism has cemented her role as the face of women’s MMA.

Carano, whose good looks and superior athleticism have made her the face of women’s MMA,  has  been profiled on the popular ESPN documentary series E:60.

The matchup with Santos will be the second fight of Carano’s career for Strikeforce. In 2006 she staged a furious comeback against Elaina Maxwell and pulled out a unanimous judges’ decision at Strikeforce: Triple Threat.

The 23-year-old Brazilian Santos has established herself as Carano’s top challenger by leveraging her superior strength and striking skills to pummel opponents. In her last start ( her Strikeforce debut) Santos overwhelmed Hitomi Akano in April of this year. The fight was marred by a weight-limit controversy that saw Akano giving up lots of bulk to Santos.

Cyborg is a member of Brazil’s famed Chute Boxe fight squad and trains alongside her husband and fellow Strikeforce competitor, Evangelista Cyborg.
