Mousasi vs. Sobral Added To Strikeforce Card After Affliction Collapse
Gegard Mousasi was left hanging with the collapse of Affliction.
Now it seems Mousasi is back in the game as Strikeforce officially announced he’ll take on Renato “Babalu” Sobral at Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg.
The August 15 Strikeforce card had taken a hit as well following the announcement that heavyweight champion, Alistair Overeem, would be unable to compete due to a re-injured hand he suffered during a bar fight.
Mousasi was originally scheduled to face Sobral at Affliction: Trilogy but Josh Barnett’s failed drug test led Affliction and SHOWTIME decided to pull the plug on the event.
That left a group of fighters signed to Affliction, including WAMMA heavyweight champ Fedor Emelianenko, out in the cold and looking for a place to fight.
“I am very happy that Strikeforce has resurrected this fight and that I will have the opportunity to become world champion,” said Mousasi. “Strikeforce is one of the world’s top promotions and I am proud to be a part of their roster of world-class fighters.”
