No Special Treatment for Kimbo on TUF? Dana White’s Tough Love
Believe That? Let’s Talk About a Bridge I Have for Sale…
According to UFC president Dana White, former street brawler Kevin Ferguson, AKA Kimbo Slice, won’t get any special privileges during his stint on the Spike TV reality show The Ultimate Fighter.
And if you believe that, I have a nice bridge you should think about buying…
“Kimbo is getting zero fucking special treatment,” White said Tuesday. “I’m not in here going – ‘Let’s make an example of this guy. Let’s get his ass kicked, let’s show the world that this guy isn’t for real.’”
According to White, he respects Ferguson for signing on with the show to prove what he can do.
“He’s a contestant like everyone coming on the show and trying to win. The only thing I say about him is I respect the fact that he did it. The guy was getting offered money from other people, but I think he saw this as an opportunity,” White said.
White said Ferguson’s contract is the same offered to the other 15 heavyweights signed for the show, but added that were Ferguson to win the show and earn his spot into the UFC, the deal would ratchet up.
“He’s got a contract if he wins the show. If he makes it into the UFC his contract is different, a lot fucking different,” White said. “That’s his carrot. If he can do this, he can make some real money.”
White says he hasn’t changed his view on Ferguson, he says he’s actually been saying the same thing all along about the former street brawler and CBS headliner.
“I never changed my mind. I always said the only way this guy will ever get into the UFC is if he went through The Ultimate Fighter. He’s always going to be the toughest guy at the barbeque, but world class?” White said. “Now we get to find out. He came here and took the tough road; he didn’t take the easy road.”
In an informal interview with Ferguson shot while he played dice and posted to YouTube, the fighter was – shall we say sanguine – about White’s recent comments.
“DW can say whatever the fuck he wants,” said Ferguson. “Like I said, as far as I’m concerned, the greatest revenge, to my knowledge, is success. I don’t care about shit-talking. I don’t care about shit-talkers.”
White said he’s prepared to be proved wrong about Slice and his skills.
“Maybe he wins the fucking thing and I have egg on my face. Won’t be the first time,” White said.
Rashad Evans, the former light heavyweight UFC champion and TUF 10 coach – and another target of White’s cartoon vitriol – said he was shocked when Ferguson showed up.
“I was like ‘Wow, now we got a show,’” Evans said. “You look at somebody like Kimbo and you’re like man, this is the guy that everybody is talking about. You’re kind of anxious to see what he can really do.”
That’s all some earnest talk, but if you actually believe there’s any way Kimbo Slice won’t be around for the finale, then you are seriously mistaken, my friend. The UFC is like a carnival, and there’s no damn way you take the Bearded Lady off the midway before the midnight show.
