With Neighboring States Like Pennsylvania and Maine on Board, New York and Massachusetts Are Likely to Fall In Step

The state of Maine is nearly ready to sanction the sport of mixed martial arts. This news comes on the heels of a report that New York State has moved in a similar direction and appears ready to sanction MMA bouts as well.

welcome to maine 300x177 Maine Gets on Board With MMA RegulationThe Maine House and Senate passed a measure by a 119-17 margin which would establish the Mixed Martial Arts Authority of Maine to regulate and promote mixed martial arts in the state. The measure also includes language which would create a panel of members – to be appointed by the governor – who would be assigned to the MMAAM.

“This legislation provides for the oversight of what is one of the fastest-growing sports. Maine is missing out on a golden opportunity to bring in new revenues,” said Maine Representative Matthew Petersen, a Democrat from Rumford. “The UFC itself purchases 600 hotel rooms when they bring an event to town.”

It’s all about the money, and the state of Maine wants their cut. They may, however, have waited too long to clear a path for MMA events. If New York moves forward with their apparent intention to legalize MMA, it’s hard to imagine Maine getting any UFC promotions to come that far north.

If Massachusetts joins New York as states which allow MMA events, the large population centers in those two states would likely prove very attractive to the major promotions like Affliction, Bellator, WEC and UFC.

The needs final approval before coming to Gov. John Baldacci for his signature.

Maine is the home state of  MMA fighters Tim Sylvia, Marcus Davis and Mike Brown.

I’m from Maine, near where Marcus Davis lives.
    I hope Baldacci signs.
