Good Looking Out – Akano’s People Let Her Down – Big Time

Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos beat the bejeezus out of Hitomi Akano Saturday and won a third-round TKO, but the real headline was, for lack of a better phrase, ‘Water on the Cage.’

cyborg akanoSantos, who came into the fight an outrageous seven pounds over the 145-pound limit, outmuscled Akano and basically moved her around the ring at will. It’s not acceptable that Akano’s handlers let this bout go on when Santos failed to make the weight. There’s a reason there are weight limits in boxing and MMA, and this bout was the proof of that reasoning.

quotation3 Akano v. Santos A JokeA smaller fighter is at a distinct disadvantage, and Akano looked more like someone ready to go shopping for the latest ‘Hello Kitty’ gear than she looked like a fighter when she stood next to the gigantic Santos.

As Pikey would say, sending your fighter in against an over-the-limit opponent is “not done, lad, simply not done.”

Now this is a killer quote from a fighter:

“It’s the first and the last time this (not making the agreed weight) is happening because she had, like, a girl problem,” Said Santos’ via her translator after the fight. “She will never do that again.”

Santos essentially rushed Akano around the cage for the first two rounds, pummeled the much, much smaller Akano out in the third. Akano did a nice job just to hold on against Santos as long as she did, but it’s her handlers who should be pummeled for letting Santos get away with such a serious breach of the agreement for the fight.

A payday is one thing, but putting your fighter in harm’s way like Akano’s camp did to Hitomi is just plain dangerous – and not the least bit sensible.

It’s not like Akano has no game, check out her fight against Molly Helsel below:
